The Decryption Key: Cognitive Architecture as the Hidden Radix of Physical Measurement

Abstract

The evolved cognitive architecture of Homo sapiens — decimal numeracy from ten fingers, water-based biochemistry, Euclidean spatial intuition from visual cortex processing, and body-scale affordances including stride length, hand-heft, and heartbeat-period temporal chunking — functions as a private encryption key that has been projected onto all physical measurement conventions. The meter, kilogram, second, and the primacy of the real-archimedean completion of the rational numbers are not "approximately natural" but are solidified cognitive fossils — phylogenetic traces mistaken for universal features of reality. This paper provides a systematic decryption: tracing each SI base unit to a specific feature of human cognitive architecture, demonstrating that the 2019 SI redefinition relocated rather than eliminated these anthropocentric choices, and proposing the adelic product formula as a genuinely observer-independent invariant. The argument is offered as the Sixth Pillar of the QNFO Grand Synthesis, explaining why the existing five pillars — Silent Radix, Adelic Physics, Ultrametric Foundations, Qubit Delusion, and Pattern-Based Ontology — are all necessary. 1. Introduction: The Invisible Observer

We are the cross-ratio, humans.

In projective geometry, the cross-ratio of four collinear points is invariant under any projective transformation — it survives changes of viewpoint, coordinate system, and scale. But the invariance depends on all four points being held fixed. Change one point, and the cross-ratio changes.

Human measurement conventions form such a cross-ratio. The physical phenomenon is one point (Earth's meridian, water's density, cesium's hyperfine transition). The cross-ratio is invariant, but only because the fourth point — the observer — is never varied. We have mistaken anthropocentric invariance for observer-independent invariance.

Once the encryption is recognized, decryption is possible. The adelic product formula — which holds for all completions of the rational numbers, real and p-adic alike, with no preferred radix and no psychological constant — provides a genuinely observer-independent invariant. To adopt it is to subtract the human observer from the measurement. This is the hardest operation in science, because the observer is the instrument doing the subtraction.

  • A = the physical phenomenon (Earth's meridian quadrant, 1 dm^3 of water, mean solar day, water triple point, human photopic sensitivity)
  • B = the mathematical divisor (10^7, 86,400, 273.16, 683)
  • C = the metrological artifact (platinum meter bar, kilogram cylinder, cesium clock, triple-point cell)
  • D = the human cognitive architecture (ten fingers, 60% water body mass, ~1s heartbeat, ~310 K body temperature, trichromatic retina)

Then (A, B; C, D) is invariant for all valid measurement operations conditional on D being fixed. If D varies — an 8-armed cephalopod, a gas-giant atmospheric dweller, a plasma-based entity — the entire configuration (A, B, C) would differ, and the resulting unit system would be unrecognizable to us. The apparent objectivity of the SI is an artifact of never varying the observer.

2.3 What This Is Not

This is not a claim that the SI is "wrong." It is adequate for terrestrial, human-scale engineering. The claim is that the SI is not "natural" or "universal" — it is a phylogenetic fossil, and mistaking fossils for fundamentals produces systematic blind spots in physics. [speculative]

This is also not relativism. There IS an observer-independent core of physics: dimensionless ratios (alpha ~ 1/137, mp/me ~ 1836), the Standard Model gauge group, and the adelic product formula. 3. The Fossil Record: SI Unit Genealogy

Decryption: The meter = (Earth's Paris meridian quadrant) / (10 raised to the power that makes the result ~ human stride). Both the numerator and the denominator are anthropocentric choices.

3.2 The Kilogram — The Substance of Our Bodies

Definition (1795): The mass of 1 cubic decimeter of pure water at 4C.

Cognitive imprints:

  • Water: 60% of human body mass — choosing water as the mass standard is choosing ourselves

Pre-2019 definition: The number of atoms in 0.012 kg of carbon-12.

3.6 The Candela — The Retinal Sensitivity Curve

Definition (1979): Luminous intensity weighted by the human eye's photopic spectral sensitivity function V(lambda), peaking at 555 nm.

Verdict: The candela is the most honest SI unit — it explicitly states it is weighted by human vision. The other six units are equally anthropocentric but conceal it.

3.7 The Ampere — The Anthropocentric Inheritance Chain

The ampere inherits anthropocentricity from the meter, kilogram, and second. The dimensionless fine-structure constant alpha ~ 1/137 is the genuine observer-independent electromagnetic quantity.


4. The 2019 Redefinition Audit

On May 20, 2019, the CGPM redefined four SI base units by fixing fundamental constants. This was widely celebrated as making the SI "based on constants of nature." This is incorrect. [speculative]

Every single constant's numerical value was chosen to preserve continuity with the anthropocentric pre-2019 definitions. The 2019 redefinition changed the legal basis of the units without changing their magnitudes. The SI now operates under a natural constants facade — the definitions reference h, c, e, kB, NA, but the magnitudes of those constants encode 230 years of anthropocentric metrology. The encryption has been moved from the definitions to the constants.


5. The Base-10 Deconstruction

5.1 Why Base-10?

We count in base-10 because we have ten fingers. This is not controversial — it is the consensus position in cognitive archaeology [mainstream interpretation]:

  • Finger counting appears in essentially every human culture (Ifrah 1998)

The adelic product formula is the exit — it holds for all observers at all completions, with no preferred radix, no psychological constant, and no Paris meridian. To adopt it is to subtract ourselves from the measurement. That is the hardest operation of all — because the measuring instrument is our own mind.
