Anthropometric Fossils: A Systematic Catalog of Human Cognitive Imprints in the International System of Units

Abstract

This paper provides a systematic catalog of the human cognitive features encoded in each of the seven base units of the International System of Units (SI). For each unit, we trace the original definition, identify the specific cognitive or biological feature that shaped it, classify whether that feature is anatomically necessary, biologically contingent, or culturally accidental, and propose the genuinely observer-independent reformulation. We audit the 2019 SI redefinition and find that it relocated rather than eliminated anthropocentric choices by selecting numerical values for fundamental constants that preserve historical unit magnitudes. We compare natural unit systems (Planck, atomic, Stoney) and demonstrate that even they carry implicit observer choices. We construct counterfactual unit systems for three non-human observers (deep-sea cephalopod, gas-giant atmospheric entity, plasma-based star-dweller) to demonstrate that the SI is unrecognizable to any observer with a different body plan. An appendix provides the full cognitive genealogy of each unit. This catalog serves as the empirical foundation for the encryption hypothesis developed in the companion paper, "The Decryption Key." 1. Introduction: Measurement as Fossil Record

Measurement conventions are fossil records of the minds that created them. Every unit choice — the magnitude, the reference substance, the mathematical divisor, the artifact material — encodes a cognitive feature of the human observer. These features are invisible to us precisely because they are the medium of our thought: we cannot see base-10 any more than a fish can see water.

This paper catalogs these fossils systematically. The methodology is reverse engineering: for each SI base unit, identify (1) the original definition, (2) the cognitive feature it encodes, (3) the necessity class of that feature, and (4) the observer-independent reformulation.

3. The 2019 Redefinition: A Systematic Audit

3.1 The Pattern

The 2019 redefinition fixed seven "defining constants": Delta-nuCs, c, h, e, kB, NA, Kcd. For each constant, the numerical value was chosen to ensure continuity — the new definition produces units indistinguishable from the old ones.

3.2 Continuity as Cognitive Inertia

The cost of continuity: The numerical values of the defining constants now permanently enshrine the anthropocentric choices of the 18th-20th centuries. 6.62607015x10^-34 is not a fundamental fact about nature — it's an artifact of defining h such that the resulting kilogram matches the mass of 1 dm^3 of water at 4C.

3.3 The Natural Constants Facade

The SI now presents a "natural constants" facade — but the floor plan behind the facade is still the cognitive architecture of an 18th-century French revolutionary with ten fingers. The encryption has moved from the definitions to the constants.


4. Natural Units: An Incomplete Solution

Planck Units

Planck units are conceptually natural but operationally still expressed in meters/kg/seconds. The Planck mass (~22 ug) is too small to handle and too large to be atomic.

Atomic Units (Hartree)

Electron-centric — why not muon or tau? Because electrons form atoms, atoms form chemistry, chemistry forms us.

Verdict

Even natural unit systems carry implicit observer choices. Dimensionless ratios are genuinely observer-independent.

The SI is a unit system for one specific observer — a ten-fingered, water-based, ground-walking, visually-oriented, ~310 K, ~70 kg, ~1.7m, 1-atm-breathing, 24h-circadian ape from Earth.


6. The Cross-Ratio Formalization
